Farm to school is a national program that enriches the connection communities have with fresh, healthy food and local food producers by changing food purchasing and education practices at schools and early care and education settings. Students gain access to healthy, local foods as well as education opportunities such as school gardens, cooking lessons and farm field trips. Farm to school empowers children and their families to make informed food choices while strengthening the local economy and contributing to vibrant communities.
At Partridge Creek Farm we offer 20 weeks of Farm to School Programming for all 5th and 6th graders at Ishpeming Middle School, where they get hands on garden experience in the PCF School Garden, and learn about food nutrition and agriculture. The students get to cook and eat the food they grow during 8 weeks of in-school healthy cooking classes.
Every October, the students host a farm stand where they compete to sell the most fresh veg grown in the school garden. The winning team gets to suggest how they should spend the money to improve the the school garden for the students who come after them and all the students vote on the suggestions.
