NMU’s College for Kids Summer Camp Visits Partridge Creek Farm
Partridge Creek Farm Hosts Northern Michigan Universities College for Kids Summer Camp
Every Summer Northern Michigan University puts on the College For Kids Summer Camp. This summer camp takes place at the NMU Seaborg center and is centered around experiential education activities for young learners.
The students had the opportunity to learn about a few things in both the Ishpeming Middle School Garden and the PCF Intergenerational Farm. Both of these sites looking fantastic at this time in the growing season, so these summer camp students were in for a treat! Mary Andronis (PCF Education Director) and Jane Turner (PCF Summer Education and Farm Intern) introduced the group of roughly 15 students ages 12-15 to the PCF sites and how daily operations usually work at the Farm and the Garden.
Keats Dormont, Partridge Creek Farms brand new Education Coordinator then led the students in a fun singing activity to break the ice and get their minds warmed up to learn about the hoop house! The students then observed the biodiversity of cultivated plants and the various insects in the farm and garden.
Keats then taught the group about photosynthesis, cellular respiration, the green house effect, and green house gases, all of which could be observed in real-time in the PCF hoop house!
Overall, we had a blast and were grateful to host such a good group of young learners!
