Ishpeming High School Students Harvest Potatoes at the Farm

In 2024, Melissa Meldrum's senior class at Ishpeming High School was paired with Partridge Creek Farm through the Locally-Integrated Food Teams in the Upper Peninsula (LIFT UP) program, designed to connect students with farmers to address real-world challenges. The previous senior class took the initiative to write a grant that resulted in the Intergenerational Farm’s first-ever crop: potatoes.

As the new school year begins, this year’s LIFT UP class visited the Farm to assist in harvesting the potatoes planted by their previous class members. We’re excited to share that these freshly harvested potatoes will be served in the school cafeteria, providing students with a direct connection to local agriculture! The potatoes will be prepared and frozen at Northwoods Test Kitchen into a form that can be more easily used in the Ishpeming School District kitchens.

This program is in collaboration with and made possible by MSU Extension and key community partners such as Marquette Alger RESA .
