Ishpeming High School Students Join 2026 Partridge Creek Farm Summer Internship

Five Ishpeming High School students in the Applied Horticulture CTE program, Flipping the Food System, joined Partridge Creek Farm’s growing team for the 2026 season. Over a 10-week internship, they gained hands-on experience across PCF garden sites, deepened their knowledge of farming and gardening, and managed an educational social media account to share their learning and outreach.

About The Internship

During the 2026 school year, students who took this applied horticulture class, had the opportunity to apply for an internship to gain hands-on experience in growing food.

Five students were chosen for this internship. Two students helped on the Community Farm where they harvested produce, prepared the Farm Stand, and worked on the CTE plots at the site. Two students spent their time at the Ishpeming Middle School Garden and in the Ishpeming Greenhouse. One of the interns documented their progress and shared educational posts on social media.

Internship Activities

Throughout these internships these students helped in a variety of different ways. Here’s a look at the projects they worked on:

• Preparing the weekly Farm Stand.

• Helping to feed the community by harvesting and washing produce.

• Helped with general farm and garden maintenance, like pulling weeds and raking wood chips.

• Overhauled the entire Ishpeming Middle School Garden to update and prepare this educational space for themselves and their peers to enjoy during the upcoming school year.

• Built 8 new free Community Grazing Beds at the Ishpeming Middle School Garden.

• Educated the community on plants and sustainable growing practices using social media.

• Operated 3 donation based Farm Stands at the Thursday night Ishpeming Farmers Market.

Flipping the Food System CTE Class

This class is offered to High School Students (9-12th grade) at Ishpeming High School and is taught by Partridge Creek Farm’s Education Coordinator, Keats Dormont. Students have the opportunity to learn about horticulture practices both in the classroom during the winter and in the Greenhouse at the Ishpeming Middle School Garden and in the CTE plots at the Partridge Creek Community Farm.
